In Syracuse, in the heart of the historic center of Ortigia, is the artisan workshop of Puparo Daniel Mauceri. Daniel with his family carries on the ancient tradition of the Puppet Opera. Many shows have been staged over the years, just as many handcrafted puppets have been made, some of which are in private homes or museums in Italy and abroad.
In 2021 Daniel Mauceri was selected by the Michelangelo Foundation to be included within the Homo Faber Guide, which encompasses the best international craftsmanship excellence. This private collection represents the fruit of years of hard work by the Vaccaro Mauceri family. With the time, the experience gained made it possible to perfect each individual creation and enrich the family heritage with all the figures found in the Carolingian cycle (wizards, dragons, ladies, monstrous creatures etc.).
Each Sicilian Pupo can be customized and made in five sizes: 27cm, 32cm, 37cm, 55cm and 80cm. Sicilian Puppets are not just armed puppets, but real works of art, which immersed in the right context also become decorative objects.
Lead times range from three days to two months of work depending on the size and required processing of the rebar. The metals used are copper, brass, nickel silver, and bronze. A key feature of Syracuse puppets is the papier-mâché face, while the internal framework is made of pine and beech wood.
